Today the sea had calmed down again, and we ventured out towards the East, where we were successful in our orca search. We found the orcas while they were scouting the area, with a little bit of feeding activity going on every now and then. Today it was very hard to get good pictures, as we are in the darkest time of year and the orcas were hanging out right in the rain. But it was even more wonderful to take down the camera and just watch them and listen to their blows! Our tour tomorrow is cancelled due to bad weather conditions, but we hope to go out again on Friday.

New boat!
New and bigger boat!
Láki Tours have bought a new boat, bigger and better!
It is a fast, modern twin-engined passenger boat, built for comfort and speed. This boat is perfect for deep sea whale watching as it can get to the whales quickly. It is a powerful boat and has covered seating so that passangers can relax between whale sightings. It can fit 70-90 passangers and will be rady for use either in February or March – stay tuned! -

Impressive orca sighting
We braved the wind and spray on our morning tour today, and went for a long search in Breiðafjörður. Our patience and perseverance was eventually rewarded by an impressive orca sighting in between lots of white caps. We are sure getting into the dark time of the year now, and we are still hoping for the majority of the herring to come in to our shores. But today at least we saw some feeding activity going on, with birds trying to pick up fish bits from just beneath the surface. Tomorrow we are running another tour at 11am, and, of course, we are hoping for orcas again!

Stunning weather
We had stunning weather conditions today, and searched the waters of Breiðafjörður for whales and dolphins. Unfortunately, we did not encounter any of the big guys, but we did spot a small harbour porpoise that was very visible in today’s calm seas. We also saw four sea eagles (white-tailed eagles) sitting on the rocks of two small islands – it was a beautiful sight, especially when one of them flew up and into the sunshine! We are planning on having our next tour tomorrow at 11am and hope to find the orcas again then.

Lots of orcas!
We had a very beautiful tour today with perfect weather conditions, even some sunshine, and lots of orcas! We first had to do a little search around until we spotted a big group coming in from the East. There were two small calves in the group, and we could observe lots of socializing behavior during the encounter. Especially the young males of the group were fooling around, swimming upside down and showing their flukes. As we travelled with them, we also came alo…ng a few more individuals, and with the backdrop of the Icelandic landscape it was the perfect encounter. Weather conditions look great for tomorrow and we are running a tour tomorrow at 11am!

We did not spot any cetaceans
16/11/2016: We went out on the boat today, but, unfortunately, we did not spot any cetaceans. We scouted towards North and had a look at the island Melrakkaey, then tried our luck closer to shore, but the orcas were not around. Fingers crossed for some good sightings after the next bad weather period that starts tomorrow!

First official tour of the season
Today, on our first official tour of the season, we were greeted once again by orcas along the coastline! We spotted a small group of 4 individuals towards the East – they were slowly travelling, foraging, and resting. We often switched off the engines to listen to the sound of their blows. The scenery was stunning as ever, and our passengers enjoyed the hot chocolate on the way home. On our way out we also spotted a white-tailed eagle and several gannets. A great start of our winter season!

We have to tell you something!
We went out on a little pre-tour today, and spotted our first orcas of the winter season!! As we made our way towards the East, we spotted the orcas along the coastline, headed towards the North and into more open waters. They sometimes stopped for foraging, and we got to see several spy hops, and one male even showed us his “sea snake”! The landscape is absolutely stunning at this time of year, and we have now seen the orcas come back earlier than in the last two winter seasons. Now we have to see if they will stay in the area or if we can encounter some other groups on our upcoming tours. We can’t wait to go out tomorrow!!

Hundreds of puffins and stunning views
On this evening’s puffin tour we not only enjoyed seeing hundreds of puffins, mostly sitting on the water around the island in large groups, but we also had stunning views over Grundarfjörður and Kirkjufell mountain, with beautiful light and amazing clouds. There were some puffins on the island and also the usual other birds, which inclde both shags and cormorants. The glassy seas and puffins sitting on the water allowed for some great photograph opportunities. Judith (Tour guide).
