    ORCAS!! Yes, we had a special new year’s present today, with a group of orcas that we spotted travelling in Breiðafjörður. We got to see one male, one female and a calf close up. These are some of our very regular winter visitors and it is awesome to finally have them back in the area!

    If you are looking for a different way to celebrate New Year’s Eve, Iceland might be the right place for you. While in Reykjavik all is about fireworks and partying – the mood in Snaefellsnes is slightly different. Celebrate a peaceful New Year’s Eve in Snaefellsnes with the chance of seeing orcas. Unfortunately, there is never a guarantee to see them but what we know already now – if the weather cooperates, we will definitely look for them also on January 1, 2020.

    Our trip today was successful in spotting some of the bigger whales! We went straight for the area, where we had spotted the humpback whales yesterday, and were lucky enough to find them again. Those were the same two individuals as yesterday, and they were, once again, foraging and feeding in the area.

    Winter Whale Watching in Snaefellsnes – Report from December 26, 2018

    We had a very nice Christmas boat trip on December 26. We spotted two humpback whales towards the North in Breidafjörður bay. They were foraging and feeding in the area. Plus, there was also quite a bit of bird life to observe. Both humpback whales did lift their flukes after some time, when going for deep dives, and we could also see their flippers just below the water surface.

    Our winter whale watching tour today took place in an extraordinarily calm sea and gave us sightings of two species we have not had so far this winter – the harbor porpoise and the humpback whale! We first spotted the humpback whale while it was feeding and going for long dives with an arched back. As the sea was so calm, we could then see a small group of harbor porpoises surface a few times not too far from the boat.

    December in Snaefellsnes is a wonderful time. Therefore we enjoy not only the whales but also the impressive landscape on our whale watching tours from Grundarfjordur. Today, Snaefellsjokull glacier was without any clouds and presented itself in the best possible way.

    We had a two-species day at Snæfellsnes today! We spotted about 6 sperm whales and 10 white-beaked dolphins in very calm waters. The light conditions were beautiful today. We saw several sperm that lifted their whale flukes into the air. On top of that the dolphins made many close approaches to our boat.

    Iceland whale watching in December is a unique experience. We had a beautiful winter boat trip out of Grundarfjördur today! Light and sea conditions were stunning and we were lucky enough to come across a pod of about 12 white-beaked dolphins. They were travelling, socializing, and feeding. We got to see them speed along, leap out of the water, and approach the bow of the boat. These dolphins live in large pods all year around Iceland. And we even had the opportunity to take pictures of them in front of the glacier Snaefellsjokull.

    More about Snaefellsjokull glacier

    Snaefellsjokull glacier is a 700,000 year old glacier-capped stratovolcano. You find it on the most western part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in Iceland. It is one of the most famous sits in Iceland. Many people know it from the novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth” written by Jules Verne in 1864. If you like reading this might be the perfect book for your holidays in Iceland.

    We had another great tour out of Ólafsvík today with the pilot whales and white-beaked dolphins again all around us. Today it was the dolphins that were the highlight with so many close passes, bow riding and big leaps out of the water. There were so many dolphins around with the pilot whales today, it was impossible to count them all. We also had diving gannets over the cetaceans, showing there was plenty of food around.     13/09/2018: Incredible day in Snæfellsnes with the social pilot whales

    On our one morning tour from Ólafsvík today we did not have to go far before our eagle eyed captain saw a splash, which turned into hundreds of long-finned pilot whales along with white-beaked dolphins. We spent the whole whale watch moving from one small group to another as we could see fins all around us in every direction. We quite often see pilot whales in Breidafjördur at this time of year, but what was wonderful about these was that they were in a social mood, with many spy-hops, rolling around, curious whales coming to check us out, bubble blowing and even one spitting water out of its mouth! We also got great looks at a small calf that still had foetal folds on its skin. The dolphins were jumping around in the distance too, and gave us a few close looks near the end. Judith (Tour guide)

    12/09/2018: Four species day in Snæfellsnes

    Our tour today from Ólafsvík had sightings of four species in beautiful calm and sunny conditions. On a stunning day in Breidafjördur we saw a couple of Minke whales at the tip of the peninsula. We did not spend too long there as there was some current and swell and we were hoping for sightings of toothed whales. We were lucky and found leaping dolphins, which led us to many hundreds of pilot whales in the same area. We spent time with white-beaked dolphins leaping around and bow-riding with many small groups of pilot whales surfacing all around us. There were also plenty of harbour porpoises in the fjord also.     10/09/2018: A great day in Snæfellsnes and the season ends explosively in Hólmavík

    We had a great trip in Ólafsvík today with four species sighted. We saw three types of toothed cetacean, pilot whales, white-beaked dolphins and the small harbour porpoise, as well as Minke whales, a type of baleen whale.

    Our last tour of the season in Hólmavík ended with a whale exploding out of the water feeding on herring! The tour started quietly with one humpback travelling through the fjord. However, right at the end of the tour we went deep inside the end of the fjord and found two humpbacks there feeding on herring. We were lucky enough to see two huge lunges out of the water, when one whale came up with herring jumping out of its way as it exploded out of the water. What an end to an amazing season with the humpbacks of Hólmavík! Judith (Tour guide)
