We had a very beautiful tour today with perfect weather conditions, even some sunshine, and lots of orcas! We first had to do a little search around until we spotted a big group coming in from the East. There were two small calves in the group, and we could observe lots of socializing behavior during the encounter. Especially the young males of the group were fooling around, swimming upside down and showing their flukes. As we travelled with them, we also came alo…ng a few more individuals, and with the backdrop of the Icelandic landscape it was the perfect encounter. Weather conditions look great for tomorrow and we are running a tour tomorrow at 11am!

We did not spot any cetaceans
16/11/2016: We went out on the boat today, but, unfortunately, we did not spot any cetaceans. We scouted towards North and had a look at the island Melrakkaey, then tried our luck closer to shore, but the orcas were not around. Fingers crossed for some good sightings after the next bad weather period that starts tomorrow!

First official tour of the season
Today, on our first official tour of the season, we were greeted once again by orcas along the coastline! We spotted a small group of 4 individuals towards the East – they were slowly travelling, foraging, and resting. We often switched off the engines to listen to the sound of their blows. The scenery was stunning as ever, and our passengers enjoyed the hot chocolate on the way home. On our way out we also spotted a white-tailed eagle and several gannets. A great start of our winter season!

We have to tell you something!
We went out on a little pre-tour today, and spotted our first orcas of the winter season!! As we made our way towards the East, we spotted the orcas along the coastline, headed towards the North and into more open waters. They sometimes stopped for foraging, and we got to see several spy hops, and one male even showed us his “sea snake”! The landscape is absolutely stunning at this time of year, and we have now seen the orcas come back earlier than in the last two winter seasons. Now we have to see if they will stay in the area or if we can encounter some other groups on our upcoming tours. We can’t wait to go out tomorrow!!

Hundreds of puffins and stunning views
On this evening’s puffin tour we not only enjoyed seeing hundreds of puffins, mostly sitting on the water around the island in large groups, but we also had stunning views over Grundarfjörður and Kirkjufell mountain, with beautiful light and amazing clouds. There were some puffins on the island and also the usual other birds, which inclde both shags and cormorants. The glassy seas and puffins sitting on the water allowed for some great photograph opportunities. Judith (Tour guide).

Glass calm seas, dolphins and whales
Our passengers today took a chance with the weather, as it was rather misty and foggy here in West Iceland this morning. However, they were well and truly rewarded with glass calm seas, dolphins and whales. Our first sighting was a good size group of 20-30 white-beaked dolphins. In the calm water we could follow them as they travelled all around the boat, looking at us, riding the bow wave and leaping next to the boat. Then, as we searched to the west in the deeper water we came across two sperm whales, one of which took a dive near the boat, lifting its majestic tail high out of the water. The weather is looking good for the next few days, so do come and join us if you can. Judith (Tour guide)

Keen birders on our puffin tour
We had a group of very this evening and as well as seeing a lot of puffins, they also saw many other species of birds that live on the island. These include Arctic terns, who also come here to breed in the summer and feed on the (hopefully) abundant sand eels. There are also shags, cormorants, razerbills, guillemots, fulmars and many species of gull. We also saw a number of grey seals sitting on rocks a little way away from the island. Judith (Tour guide)

Orcas, dolphis and sperm whales.
We were running two tours today, and both were toothed whale watching trips! On our morning tour we spotted a small group of white-beaked dolphins, a small group of orcas, and about 8 sperm whales. In the afternoon, the killer whales had left the area, but the dolphins and the sperm whales were still around. On both trips we succeeded in getting a close look at all cetaceans we encountered, by slowly and carefully maneuvering parallel to them. Sea conditions werevery good on both trips, and it looks like this great weather will continue tomorrow. We are running only one tour tomorrow at 10am, so come and join us in the morning!

Puffins and seals
We took two puffin tours out today. They both enjoyed calm seas and on the afternoon tour, as well as puffins, we enjoyed stunning clouds pouring over Kirkjufell mountain and our home town of Grundarfjörður. On the evening tour there were a lot of puffins sitting in the water as well as some on the island, and we also go to see a seal sitting near the waters edge on Melrakkaey Island. Judith (Tour guide)

Playful group of white-beaked dolphins
The sea conditions on our whale watching tour today were not perfect at the beginning of the trip as the incredible Icelandic wind hurtled over the mountains, but as the wind was coming from the land, it did not create big waves. We scouted to the east as the conditions were more favourable in that direction and although we did not manage to find any of the larger cetaceans, we did see a very playful group of white-beaked dolphins that followed the boat for a long time, bow-riding and jumping in front of us. The children on board were shouting with delight! The weather is looking like it is going to be beautiful this coming weekend so join us if you can! Judith (Tour guide)
