Unfortunately, no whales or dolphins were sighted on today’s whale watching tour. We did spot two sea eagles and at least 4 Atlantic grey seals, after we had persevered in the darkness and mists. When we came back on land it even started snowing! Tours are cancelled for the next two days due to bad weather conditions.

Lucky with the orcas!
We were out on sea again today, and this time we were very lucky with the orcas! We still had to scout far out to find them, but then found a spot where they were busy feeding. There were a lot of gulls and even some Northern gannets hovering over them, and as we were drifting, some of the individuals made a close approach at the side of the boat. Even though it was a dark and rainy day, this was so much fun, and our passengers enjoyed the spectacle. Another bad weather period is approaching, and tomorrow’s tour is already cancelled. We are hoping for Wednesday to go and check for orcas again!

Did not spot any whales or dolphins
We scouted really far towards the East and North today, but, unfortunately, did not spot any whales or dolphins. We had stunning weather conditions, sunshine and a mirror-like sea included. We hope to find the orcas really soon again!

Today we searched for the orcas far towards the East and North, but, unfortunately, did not spot them in the area. However, our patience was rewarded towards the end of the tour, when we spotted a playful group of white-beaked dolphins at the mouth of Grundarfjörður. There were about 10 individuals, and some of them leaped out of the water repeatedly. It was a pretty sight with the sun already disappearing again behind the mountains. Tomorrow we will try our luck with the orcas again!

Orcas in Breiðafjörður
Finally we had another chance to go out on sea, and after a long search we were successful in spotting a small group of 4 orcas in Breiðafjörður. They were scouting the area and went for longer dives while travelling. It was dark and rainy today, but our perseverance was rewarded by a few close approaches of two of the individuals. On the way home our passengers enjoyed a hot chocolate and got to chat about the orcas with us. Another nice day on the water!

Orcas harassed a grey seal.
On our tour today we did not have to search for the orcas for too long as we spotted them just at the mouth of the fjord. Today was very special, because we had the opportunity to witness how a group of 4 orcas harassed a grey seal. They were circling the seal, and when the seal came close to our boat for shelter, the orcas would dive underneath and then also circle our boat. The seal already had wounds on several parts of the body, and even though it was left alo…ne by the orcas later on, it most likely will not survive. After this incredible encounter, we ventured further out of the fjord, where we also spotted a small group of white-beaked dolphins that accompanied our boat for a while. A very exciting two-species day!

Rewarded with a fascinating encounter
We were finally able to go out on sea again today, and we were rewarded with a fascinating encounter, seeing both orcas and gulls feeding on some herring in a little feeding frenzy. We had to scout for a longer time to come across the animals in Breiðafjörður, but once we found them we witnessed quite the action going on. The orcas were actively hunting the herring just below the surface, before travelling further out into the deeper waters. A wonderful experience!

Today the sea had calmed down again, and we ventured out towards the East, where we were successful in our orca search. We found the orcas while they were scouting the area, with a little bit of feeding activity going on every now and then. Today it was very hard to get good pictures, as we are in the darkest time of year and the orcas were hanging out right in the rain. But it was even more wonderful to take down the camera and just watch them and listen to their blows! Our tour tomorrow is cancelled due to bad weather conditions, but we hope to go out again on Friday.

Impressive orca sighting
We braved the wind and spray on our morning tour today, and went for a long search in Breiðafjörður. Our patience and perseverance was eventually rewarded by an impressive orca sighting in between lots of white caps. We are sure getting into the dark time of the year now, and we are still hoping for the majority of the herring to come in to our shores. But today at least we saw some feeding activity going on, with birds trying to pick up fish bits from just beneath the surface. Tomorrow we are running another tour at 11am, and, of course, we are hoping for orcas again!

Stunning weather
We had stunning weather conditions today, and searched the waters of Breiðafjörður for whales and dolphins. Unfortunately, we did not encounter any of the big guys, but we did spot a small harbour porpoise that was very visible in today’s calm seas. We also saw four sea eagles (white-tailed eagles) sitting on the rocks of two small islands – it was a beautiful sight, especially when one of them flew up and into the sunshine! We are planning on having our next tour tomorrow at 11am and hope to find the orcas again then.
