Due to the weather conditions we could only run one tour today at 10am. On this tour, we went out towards the North and scouted the area at the mouth of the fjord as the wind had already picked up further out. We did not spot any whales or dolphins, but when we came to the island Melrakkaey, we saw several grey seals and even some harlequin ducks which are rare in this area (see picture). Our tour tomorrow morning is cancelled due to the ongoing bad weather, but we hope to get out on sea again in the afternoon.

Today we started running two tours daily, at 10am and 2pm. On our morning tour we ventured out towards the West and spotted a group of white-beaked dolphins. They were feeding underneath some gannets and soon started travelling parallel to our boat. On the afternoon trip, we, sadly, did not spot any cetaceans even though we went for a long scout in Breidafjördur. Two tours are also scheduled for tomorrow, but our tours on Friday are cancelled due to bad weather conditions.

As we went, once more, out towards the Northwest today, we found the dolphins again, and almost in the same area as yesterday! They were just as playful, leaping out of the water and approaching the boat, even swimming underneath the bow. The mountains looked stunning today and we came past the Krossnes lighthouse, which is always a pretty sight with Mt. Kirkjufell in the background!

Today we scouted once again towards the Northwest and spotted a group of white-beaked dolphins! There were about 10 individuals in this group, and we got to see them leaping out of the water next to our boat. The dolphins were accompanied by quite a few Northern gannets. On our way back to Grundarfjördur, we also had a look at the island Melrakkaey and its birdlife.

Today we tried something different and scouted towards the West, accompanied by hundreds of Northern fulmars. The weather was great and we soon spotted a playful group of about 15 white-beaked dolphins! At the beginning, they were spread out in the area, but soon they grouped up and started travelling parallel to our boat, coming up close to us and far away in front of a beautiful winter landscape. We got good views of the glacier in the sunshine and the snowy Westfjords in the distance. A great winter day!

 “Supreme” (SN066) and “Nótt“ (SN067) were around in the area today, and we were lucky enough to spot them on our whale watching tour and observe them while they were travelling North and out of the fjord! It was just great to see these two in the mists – we could even spot some gannets that were dive-bombing into the water to catch some fish. We hope for more orca encounters on our next trips!

Today we could go out in good weather conditions! Sadly, no orcas were spotted, but we saw two white-tailed eagles, and these curious grey seals that were hanging out at the island Melrakkaey! Tomorrow’s tour is cancelled due to bad weather conditions.

No cetaceans were sighted on today’s trip, but weather conditions were just great! We spotted a group of Northern gannets and a grey seal close to the island Melrakkaey. We will go out tomorrow, but there will be no tour on Sunday.
